Resonator: Teufelsberg
sich in Berlin auf die Suche nach einem Ort, der ihnen prägnantes Audio- und Bildmaterial liefern würde.
Bei ihrer Recherche stießen sie auf den geschichtsträchtigen Berliner Teufelsberg. Mit Kameras und
Aufnahmegeräten begaben die Künstler sich dorthin und verbrachten unter anderem drei Nächten auf dem
Gelände, um dort Töne zu sammeln und die Suche danach filmisch zu dokumentieren.
Unter dem Namen „Resonator“ haben der bildende Künstler Lüling und der Musiker Schmid schon
mehrfach in ähnlicher Weise zusammen gearbeitet. Nach der gemeinsamen Recherchetour sichten und
bearbeiten beide unabhängig von einander das gesammelte Material, wobei jeder seinen eigenen
Kriterien folgt.
Das Herzstück der Arbeit von „Resonator“ ist der Liveauftritt, bei dem Sound und Bild wieder zusammen-
fließen. Die Präsentation erfolgt dabei in einer eigens entworfenen Installation, innerhalb derer die
Künstler agieren. Beide gehen dabei in der Art des DJs/VJs vor: das Sound- bzw. Videomaterial wird
übereinandergelegt, verzerrt und auf vielfältige Weise modifiziert. Dabei beeinflussen sich nicht nur Bild
und Ton wechselseitig, auch die Stimmung des Publikums nimmt Einfluss auf den Verlauf der Improvisation.
Entsprechend gehen Lüling und Schmid auch an ihren Auftritt am 1. November bei Cruise & Callas heran:
Je nach Stimmung wird die Performance von „Resonator“ im Laufe des Abends beginnen und sich über
eine oder mehrere Sessions erstrecken.
Erstmals haben die Künstler die Aufbauten für ihren Auftritt bei Cruise & Callas auch für die dauerhafte
Installation konzipiert. Hierfür werden sie eine DVD herstellen, die ihre Session dokumentiert. Sie wird bis
zum Ende der Ausstellung am 29. November innerhalb der Installation zu sehen und zu hören sein.
Shortly before their performance at Cruise & Callas, the Swiss duo Frank Lüling und Oliver Schmid started
to look for a location in Berlin which would supply them with some rich audio and visual material. Through
their investigations they came upon the historically resonant Berlin hill, Teufelsberg. With cameras and
recording equipment the artists made their way there and, amongst other things, spent three nights on
the site in order to collect sounds and to document on fi lm the search for them.
Under the name “Resonator”, the artist Lüling and the musician Schmid have already worked together in
a similar way on a number of occasions. After the joint investigations, both artists sift through and work on
the collected material independently from each other, with each following his own criteria.
The core of the work of “Resonator” is the live performance, in which the sound and images flow together.
The presentation takes place in a specially designed installation, within which the artists act. Both of them
go about their business in the manner of DJs/VJs: the sound and video material is laid on top of each
other, distorted and modified in manifold ways. It is not only the sound and images that influence each
other reciprocally in this process, but also the mood of the audience which has an effect on the course of
the improvisation.
Lüling and Schmid’s approach to their performance at Cruise & Callas on 1 November is in similar fashion:
the atmosphere in the room will determine how the performance of “Resonator” begins in the course of
the evening, and whether it stretches over one or more sessions.
For the first time the artists have conceived of their performance set-up as a long-running installation.
To this end they will produce a DVD which will document their session. This will be viewable within the
installation until the end of the exhibition on 29 November.
